CHRONOLOGY-Women suicide bombers
Here is a list of some major attacks involving women suicide: April 9, 1985 – The first known female suicide bomber may have been the 16 year old girl Sana #39; Youcef Mehaidli a member of the secular Syrian Social National Party. Also known as Khyadali Sana, drove a vehicle into a convoy of IDF in southern Lebanon, killing two soldiers. May 21, 1991 – Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, a woman militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) carried out a suicide bombing killing Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in an election campaign rally in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. – Prime Minister sent more than 50,000 Indian troops to enforce a peace agreement between the LTTE and Colombo in 1987. This quickly collapsed and the Indians ended up fighting the LTTE before retiring in 1990. March 16, 1999 – At least four people were killed and five wounded when a female suicide bomber blew himself up in a suburb of the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. The attacker jumped off a car carrying the chief inspector Mohammed Nilabdeen of terrorist investigative unit of the police. Nilabdeen injured. – In addition to the attacker, the dead included two men who swallowed a cyanide capsule when they were stopped at the site of the explosion.
June 2000 – Two Chechen women drove a truck packed with explosives into an army base in Alkhan-Yurt, west of Grozny in Chechnya. At least 27 soldiers of the Russian special forces were killed.
April 12, 2002 – A suicide bomber blew himself up in the Mahane Yehuda market, Jerusalem”s main market outdoors killing six people and leaving about 90 injured. Read more »
